Lurinjyoti Gogoi, opposition candidate from Margherita (Assam), Dibrugarh parliamentary constituency, said natives of Assam can "never accept" the CAA, which will be a key issue in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Illegal infiltration of foreigners into Assam has been a cause of concern for a long time and the BJP has now legalized it with this Act, which is unacceptable to the people, Gogoi said in an interview during the election campaign here.

He said, “Assam has borne the burden of illegal foreigners till 1971 and now four more years till 2014 have been added to it.”

"How can people accept this? There was a long-running movement in the state against illegal infiltration and with the CAA, the identity of Assamese is at stake," Gogoi claimed.

The United Opposition Forum Assam (UofA) had declared Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Gogoi as its candidate from Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat, from where Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is contesting as the BJP candidate. The Center had in March enacted the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, which notified rules four years after the law was passed by Parliament, to ban undocumented immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who came to India before December 31. Provides fast-track citizenship for non-Muslim immigrants. 2014.

"The CAA is completely motivated, communal and unconstitutional and is a ploy by the BJP to further burden Assam and its resources," Gogoi alleged.

“The principle of secularism is enshrined in our Constitution, but the law is based on religious division,” he claimed.

The AJP chief said the opposition parties are protesting against the CAA and "this is a very serious and dangerous issue, which will also have economic, social, cultural and linguistic impact on the people of the state."

He said, the people of Assam are very worried about this and this will be visible in the upcoming elections.Gogoi, as general secretary of the All Assam Students Union (AASU), was at the forefront of the anti-CAA movement in the state when it was implemented in December 2019.

The CAA movement led to the formation of two political parties in 2022 – AJP, headed by Gogoi, and Raijor Dal, led by Akhil Gogoi.

Lurinjyoti Gogoi is locked in a triangular contest against BJP's Sonowal and Aam Aadmi Party's Manoj Dhanover in Dibrugarh.

On both his and Sonowal's roots in AASU, he said, "Yes, we are from the student body, but Sonowal compromised his ideology by claiming the rights of the indigenous population."

He said, "I am following the basic principles of AASU and fighting for the betterment of the people by trying to resolve many unresolved issues like National Register of Citizens (NRC), implementation of Assam Accord and linguistic and cultural identity of the state. Am.,

Gogoi alleged Sonowal "has deviated from this path and has compromised with communal forces for his own political gains."

He said, people will give a befitting reply to Sonowal in the elections.

Asked about Dibrugarh once being a hub of militant activities, the opposition leader said without ULFA (Independent) leader Paresh Baruah, the recent peace accord signed with the pro-talk faction of the outfit would have no meaning.

Gogoi said Paresh Baruah's presence is necessary for any peace talks with the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA).

Talking about tea garden workers, who constitute over 30 per cent of Dibrugarh voters, the AJP president said the BJP made many promises to them but "failed to fulfill them".“They have not even given the workers the promised daily wage of Rs 351, which has caused deep resentment among them,” he said.

"Tea is a major industry in Assam and we are committed to resolving the issues of stakeholders so that quality, production and workers' conditions improve," Gogoi said.

Gogoi had earlier contested from two constituencies under Dibrugarh parliamentary seat in the last assembly elections but lost.
