The Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) called for a bandh in Dimapur on Friday, affecting trade and commercial activities in the state's commercial capital.

The CNCCI, in a statement, once again urged the state government to take immediate action to stop the "continued" extortion, pressure and intimidation by underground groups, saying such illegal activities against the business community over extortion will be stopped. Can no longer be tolerated.

CNCCI said that the shutdown will continue until the government takes effective, permanent and satisfactory steps.

State Home Commissioner Vicky Kenya said the state government is aware of "large-scale extortion of money in the name of taxes" from traders by various underground groups, especially in Dimapur.

Expressing displeasure over the situation, he said most of the underground groups allegedly collecting donations in the name of "taxes" have signed ceasefire agreements with the central government.

“We have asked the police and district administration to take action. “Such activities adversely affect the law and order situation and good governance of the state government,” Kenya told the media.

As part of confidence building measures among traders, the state government has asked the Dimapur Police Commissioner to increase patrolling in market areas and deploy adequate forces in the surrounding areas.

However, the DCCI said that such directions had been issued earlier by state governments as well, but that did not stop such "persistent" extortion by underground groups.
