Kolkata: Bangladeshi smugglers attacked BSF soldiers with sharp weapons near a border post in Baharampur sector of West Bengal on Friday night.

According to a BSF statement on Saturday, the soldiers of the 73rd battalion were on duty when one of them was targeted by smugglers armed with sharp weapons and sticks.

The soldier challenged the smugglers to stop, but they ignored his warning and forcefully crossed the border and entered India. His companions from the Indian side also moved towards the soldier.

In retaliation, the jawan fired two rounds from his gun, causing the smugglers to flee back to Bangladesh, while their Indian companions fled into the densely cropped fields.

During the subsequent search under the supervision of the Commanding Officer, a sharp edged weapon was found at the spot.

Similar attacks have taken place recently in the South Bengal Frontier, including the incident at Border Outpost Kaijuri, 102 Battalion, where a woman constable was attacked by seven smugglers.

Following these incidents, BSF recently held a meeting with Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) to strongly protest the unprovoked attacks by Bangladeshi smugglers.
