His meeting with his German counterpart Olaf Scholz will focus on military aid to Ukraine and the war in Gaza. There is also likely to be discussion on Britain's controversial asylum deal with Rwanda, which was approved by the British Parliament on Tuesday.

Although Britain has not been an EU member for more than four years, it is still one of Germany's most important allies in NATO, the G7 and the G20. Along with Germany, the country is Ukraine's most important European arms supplier and has recently pledged large amounts of new military aid.

In the Middle East, unlike Germany, British air forces were recently involved in defending against a major Iranian attack on Israel.

The British asylum agreement has also attracted considerable criticism in Germany. Asylum seekers arriving in the UK without valid papers could in the future be immediately deported to the East African country and apply for asylum there.

The opposition in Germany is also calling for asylum procedures to be transferred to countries outside the EU.
