New Delhi: The focus should be on further improving processes as well as ensuring faster turnaround to harness the potential of the country's air cargo sector, a senior government official said on Thursday.

The government is working on developing logistics hubs.

Piyush Srivastava, Senior Economic Advisor, Ministry of Civil Aviation, said that the future of the air cargo sector is bright and the number of cargo carriers in the country is expected to increase.

Currently, Indian carriers have around 18 cargo ships.

Speaking at a conference organized by ACFI (Air Cargo Forum India) in the national capital, he said the focus will be on further improving the ease of doing business and accelerating transformation in the air cargo sector.

While passenger traffic has improved after the coronavirus pandemic hit, air cargo has still not fully recovered to pre-Covid levels.

In 2023-24, air cargo handling in the country was projected to be slightly more than 3.36 million tonnes.

According to DPIIT Joint Secretary Surendra Kumar Ahirwar, a lot of activities are taking place in the logistics sector including skill development of people.

He also said that the utilization of existing air cargo facilities is less than optimal and stressed the need to develop hubs as part of the logistics infrastructure.

According to ACFI President Yashpal Sharma, the air cargo sector accounts for about 10 per cent of domestic carriers' revenue.

Citing market research reports, he said the country's air freight market is expected to grow to US $ 16.37 billion by 2027.

Additionally, plans to set up air transport shipment hubs at major airports are expected to accelerate the growth of the industry, he said.
