This is the story of two ships, which were laid down next to each other at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd in Kolkata.

One of them is INS Sagardhwani, a marine acoustics research vessel built by GRSE and handed over to the Indian Navy in 1994. He has returned to his birthplace to repair a well.

The second is INS Dirhak, a survey ship (large) which is in the final stages. It is rare that two ships of the same class, despite the difference in generations, work together in a shipyard. The illustrious career graph of INS Sagardhwani speaks volumes about GRSE's shipbuilding capabilities even 30 years ago.

In its first 23 years of service, INS Sagardhwani completed 200 scientific missions, helping marine scientists develop indigenous, state-of-the-art underwater sensors for the Indian Navy.

He was honored for this in a special program by the Navy in 2017.

On October 11, 2023, still nearing the age of 30, she set out on a two-month long Sagar Maitri Mission IV, following the path of INS Kistna, which had participated in the International Indian Ocean Campaign between 1962 and 1965.

Over the next 60 days, INS Sagardhwani cruised extensively in the North Arabian Sea and commenced collaborative research with Oman, allowing Indian scientists to collaborate with their Indian Ocean Region counterparts studying the oceans and build stronger working relationships. Got permission. Made capable.INS Nirdesh (110 m) is a larger platform than the 85.1 m long INS Sagaradhwani and when delivered, will have more advanced sensors and other equipment.

By working together on both these platforms, GRSE claims to showcase not only its ability to build some of the most advanced and powerful warships for the Indian Navy, but also the shipyard's commitment towards repairing and upgrading old assets. It shows.

While INS Nirdesh is being built with state-of-the-art technology and modern design principles, INS Sagardhwani will undergo system upgrades to meet contemporary standards which will help it serve the Navy for many years.

“While the refit team breathes new life into INS Sagardhwani by integrating modern systems, the production team carefully integrates INS Director with state-of-the-art components, turning the phrase ‘refit and production working together’ into reality. It highlights the role of GRSE as a leader and pioneer in marine engineering and tells a powerful story of sustainability, growth and the unwavering pursuit of maritime excellence,” said a senior GRSE official.
