The club and player announced the 35-year-old's departure on social media two weeks after losing the Champions League final against Real Madrid.

“Borussia Dortmund and Mats Hummels will part ways. The German defender has spent over thirteen years at the club and has made a significant mark by winning two Bundesliga titles and the DFB-Pokals with the club, among many other achievements. "We are grateful for the successful performances we have achieved together," the club said in a statement posted on Twitter.

It was reported that Hummels and head coach Edin Terzic had a falling out which led to a verbal altercation between the two a few days before the final and Hummels made it clear that he would not extend his contract if Turzic was to remain in charge.

The club announced Terzic's decision to leave the club just one day before Hummels' departure.

“A total of over 13 years in black and yellow is coming to an end. Established as professionals, we celebrated major titles together and experienced an unforgettable time with BVB. The moments shared will last forever. And we will always be Borussia fans...thank you for everything!" read a statement posted by Hummels on their Instagram account.
