Abdul Arafat, who was pursuing a master's degree in information technology at the University of Cleveland in Ohio, has not been in contact with his family since March and his family received a ransom call.

The Consulate General of India in New York had announced on April 9 that the student was found dead in Cleveland, Ohio.

AIMIM MLC Mirza Rehmat Baig completed the paperwork and received the body at the airport. The body was later shifted to Arafat's residence in Medchal Malkajgir district near Hyderabad. The last rites will be performed on Tuesday.AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi had earlier spoken to Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra and also written a letter to the Consulate General of India in New York seeking necessary assistance in finding Abdul Arafat.

Arfath went to America in May 2023 to pursue Masters in IT from Cleveland University. His family claims that they have not spoken to him since March 7.

Arafat's father Mohammed Salim received a call from an unknown person on March 17, who claimed that Arafat had been kidnapped by an alleged drug-dealing gang and demanded US$1,200 for his release.

The caller threatened to sell Arfath's kidney if the ransom was not paid.Sali informed his relatives in the US, who filed a missing complaint with the Cleveland Police. The police had issued an order for surveillance.

The family wrote to the Indian Consulate in Chicago on 18 March for help in locating Arfath.

Arafat reportedly left his home in Reserve Square on March 5 and did not return.

The student's body was found in a decomposed state in a lake in Cleveland on April 8. The body was recovered when police began investigating a bag containing a laptop and ID card found by a jogger.Cleveland police are investigating the cause of death.
