Mumbai, a day after thousands of people gathered at Marine Drive to take part in the victory parade of the T20 World Cup-winning Indian team, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Friday said that between 10 and 12 tonnes were collected trash metrics from the iconic ride after the event.

More than 100 employees of the civic solid waste management department, besides members of NGOs, participated in the cleaning drive, which began at 11.30 pm on Thursday and ended at 8 am on Friday, an official said.

Tippers carrying around three tons of garbage, compactors with a capacity of six tons and small vehicles with a capacity of 500 kilograms were used to clean the area, he said.

"The rubbish mainly consists of plastic bottles, food wrappers and glasses, as well as shoes, slippers and other items. The dry waste is mainly collected on Marine Drive. The shoes and chappals, which were collected in five small vehicles, were will be sent to for recycling," said Jaipdeep More, deputy municipal commissioner of ward A.

The open bus parade started from the National Center for Performing Arts (NCPA) at Nariman Point after 7.30 pm and reached the Wankhede Stadium. Although it normally takes five minutes to cover the distance between these two points, the parade took more than an hour and a half to do so due to the large crowd.

In a press release issued earlier in the day, the BMC said two tippers were also used to lift garbage from the site, which will be sent to recycling plants instead of landfills.

The massive cleanup operation after one of the world's largest homecoming events drew praise from netizens.

"Before the citizens celebrating the World Cup victory parade woke up, sanitation workers had already cleaned and tidied the Marine Drive area. The night before, the Marine Drive area was filled with thousands of shoes and sandals, and these workers were busy removing garbage until dawn," wrote citizen @ivaibhavk on X.

"By morning, they had restored Mumbai to its original state. We should all express our gratitude to these workers," said the social media user, who also attached two videos to highlight the stellar effort of the civic agencies.

At least 11 people were rushed to hospitals suffering from minor injuries or feeling dizzy due to the massive crowding along the victory parade route.
