CML affects the bone marrow and is characterized by uncontrolled growth of white blood cells (WBCs), particularly granulocytes, in the bone marrow.

Globally, CML affects a large number of people, with estimates ranging from 1.2 to 1.5 million individuals.

Despite its prevalence, CML is relatively rare compared to other forms of leukemia, comprising about 15 percent of all leukemia cases.

A recent study published in the journal Lancet showed that the condition is found in very young individuals, with most patients in India being between 30 and 40 years of age.

In comparison, the average age of diagnosis in Western countries is 64 years.K.S. Nataraj senior hematologist and hemato-oncologist, HCG Comprehensive Cancer Car Hospital, Bengaluru, told IANS.

He said, "This high number is largely because more people nowadays are diagnosed on time because they go for regular general checkups and doctors recommend testing, for example, when suspicious A high WBC count is detected."

If diagnosed and treated early, CML can be cured to a great extent.

Common symptoms of CML include night sweats, weight loss, fever, bone pain, and an enlarged spleen.

“CML is actually a curable form of blood cancer.However, achieving success in treatment requires a delicate balance. Consistent medication intake and regular checkups are important in this journey. CML can be managed with careful monitoring of individual treatment strategies,” Tulika Seth, Professor Hematology, AIIMS, New Delhi, told IANS.

He said, “Living with CML is a journey that comes with unique challenges at each stage, it is important to prioritize consistent monitoring, comply with treatment to Optima treatment goals and embrace advances in therapy."
