Guwahati: BJP's Bijuli Kalita Medhi is ahead of her nearest Congress rival Meira Borthakur Goswami by more than 1.8 lakh votes in the prestigious Guwahati parliamentary constituency, election officials said.

Medhi has so far received 5,52,892 votes while his nearest rival has received 3,70,837 votes.

The BJP has replaced its sitting MP Queen Ojha with Medhi, who is the state party vice-president and former deputy mayor of Guwahati.

Guwahati, considered the gateway to North East and South East Asia, is the only constituency where two women are in direct contest for the second consecutive time.
