This violence happened late on Wednesday night. The deceased was identified as Dilip Pahan of Shri Krishnasharanpur village under Khallikote police limits of the district.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik condemned the incident of violence on Thursday.

“Deeply disturbed and saddened by the extremely unfortunate and tragic incident of violence in Khallikote area. Such incidents of violence have no place in our democracy and civil society. I strongly condemn this incident. My deepest condolences to the family that has lost their loved one and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured.I am sure the police will take strict exemplary action against the perpetrators of this heinous crime,” CM Patnai posted on his 'X' account.

Expressing deep concern over the incident, Odisha Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Nikunj Bihari Dhal on Thursday directed the Ganjam District Collector and Superintendent of Police to take immediate steps to control pre-poll violence and restore peace in the district. ,

Local sources claimed that the deceased, along with other BJP workers, who had recently joined the party after leaving the ruling BJD, were putting up election campaign posters in Srikrishnasarnapur village late on Wednesday night. A clash broke out when some BJD workers objected to putting up the posters. Many people including Dilip suffered serious injuries in the pre-poll fight.He was immediately taken to the nearest hospital in Khalikote. He was later shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for advance treatment. Dilip died during treatment at MKCG hospital.

BJP workers on Thursday protested outside the Khallikote police station demanding immediate arrest of the attackers. They also blocked roads connecting Khallikote to Bhubaneswar, causing traffic halt.Voting is to be held on May 20 in Khallikote assembly constituency under Aska parliamentary constituency.
