Agartala: The BJP on Tuesday retained both Lok Sabha seats in Tripura with its candidates defeating India Bloc candidates by huge margins.

Former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb defeated his nearest rival and Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee President Ashish Kumar Saha from Tripura West Lok Sabha seat by 6,11,578 votes.

The Rajya Sabha MP got 8,81,341 votes, while Saha got 2,69,763 votes.

In 2019, BJP's Pratima Bhowmik won the Tripura West seat by a margin of 5,73,532 votes.

Debbarman, sister of Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Debbarma, won the Tripura East Lok Sabha seat by defeating her nearest rival Rajendra Reang of CPI(M) by 4,86,819 votes.

Kriti Devi got 7,77,447 votes, while Reang got 2,90,628 votes.

Saffron camp candidate Rebati Tripura had won the seat five years ago by over 4.5 lakh votes.

On the party's landslide victory, BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharya said that people who had faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi voted for the saffron party.

"After Tipra Motha joined the coalition government, the BJP has strengthened its hold in the political scenario of the state," he said.

Saha claimed that the Congress had demanded repolling on both parliamentary seats "because many voters could not cast their votes on the polling day but the Election Commission did not pay attention".

"Today many of our counting agents were thrown out of the counting hall by BJP supporters. The returning officer has not provided proper security to our counting agents," the Congress candidate said.
