These seats are those that will fall vacant due to the resignation of MLAs who have been elected to the Lok Sabha in the recently concluded elections.

The seats which will be vacant are - Mainpuri's Karhal (Akhilesh Yadav), Awadhesh Prasad (Ayodhya), Lalji Verma (Ambedkar Nagar), Zia-ur-Rehman Burke (Moradabad). All these seats are with Samajwadi Party.

The seats where by-elections are to be held and are currently held by BJP include Anoop Valmiki (Aligarh), Atul Garg (Ghaziabad), Parveen Patel (Phulpur) and Vinod Kumar Bind (Mirzapur).

By-election will also be held on Meerapur assembly seat as MLA Chandan Chauhan has been elected to Lok Sabha on RLD's election symbol.

UP Minister Jitin Prasad, who won from Pilibhit seat, was a member of the Legislative Council and has sent his resignation. By-elections will also be held for his seat in the Upper House.

The sword is also hanging over the heads of six SP MLAs who cross-voted in the Rajya Sabha elections in February earlier this year. These include Manoj Pandey (Rae Bareli), Rakesh Pandey (Ambedkar Nagar), Abhay Singh (Faizabad), Rakesh Pratap Singh (Amethi), Vinod Chaturvedi (Jalaun), Pooja Pal (Kaushambi).

Samajwadi Party, which won the Lok Sabha elections with 37 seats, is in no mood to forgive these rebel MLAs. SP President Akhilesh Yadav has made it clear that action will be initiated against him 'soon'.

If SP files a disqualification petition against these rebel MLAs and the Speaker disqualifies them, then by-elections will be held on their six seats also.

A senior BJP official told IANS on Wednesday, “We have started preparations for the by-elections without wasting any time. We have learned lessons from the Lok Sabha elections and we will ensure that we win back the seats in the by-elections. The process of shortlisting the candidates is about to begin.

On the other hand, the Samajwadi spokesperson said that the voters have already taught the rebel MLAs a lesson and the SP has won in their respective constituencies.

He said, “The by-election will further strengthen the position of India Bloc in the UP Assembly.''
