Imphal, Both BJP and Congress on Friday accused each other of spreading violence during elections in Manipur and violating the model code of conduct.

BJP state unit general secretary K Sharat Kumar told reporters that Congress candidate from Manipur Interior Lok Sabha seat, Angomach Bimol Akoijam, visited several polling stations with a large number of his supporters and instigated officials and voters, leading to ruckus at times.

"Akoijam visited several polling stations with his supporters and spoiled the election atmosphere. We have lodged a complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer and the Returning Officer," he said.

On the other hand, Congress has blamed BJP for the violence that took place during voting in Inner Manipur.

Congress state unit working president Kh Debabrata told reporters, “We strongly condemn the acts of armed unidentified people entering polling stations and intimidating voters and indulging in proxy voting.,

"We did not see the government making any effort to conduct the polls peacefully, in a free and fair manner," Singh said.

Girish Chodankar, election in-charge of Manipur and Nagaland for the AICC, wrote on Twitter that despite a written presentation to the Chief Electoral Officer about "potential tension", violence and booth capturing by armed miscreants has been witnessed at several places.

"They allowed frustrated BJP supporters to forcibly occupy booths and prevent common people from exercising their franchise, thereby making a mockery of the elections. We have demanded repolling at such booths," he said.

Earlier during the day, incidents of threats and firing were reported from at least two places in the Interior Manipur constituency, where voting for the Lok Sabha elections was underway, officials said.At Thamnapokpi in Moirang constituency of Bishnupur district, armed men fired several rounds in the air near a polling booth, prompting voters to flee, police said. Additional security personnel were sent to the spot to control the situation.

He said that unidentified armed men also intimidated election agents of a particular political party at various places and asked them to leave the polling station.

At Uripok and Iroishemba in Imphal West district, armed men asked party agents to leave the premises of the polling stations, an official said.

At Kiyamgei in Kirao constituency of Imphal East district, armed men opened fire indiscriminately and intimidated Congress polling agents.
