BJP's Berhampur Lok Sabha constituency candidate Pradeep Panigrahi was injured in a clash with an independent candidate from the assembly constituency of the same name after the completion of voting on Monday, police said.

Panigrahi suffered an injury on his right shoulder and complained of chest pain, following which he was admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur and later shifted to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar on Tuesday for better treatment.

Police on Tuesday arrested former Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BEMC) mayor Shiv Shankar Dash, who is contesting as an independent candidate from the Berhampur assembly constituency, after he attacked Panigrahi near a polling station in the city on Monday evening. Arrested for doing.



Dash, 50, was arrested under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) after a case was registered at Gosaninuagaon police station. SP (Berhampur) Sarth Sarangi said a case was registered against Panigrahi after he lodged a complaint.Police said Das's wife Asha Kumari Das also filed a counter FIR on Tuesday, alleging that her husband was also attacked by BJP supporters.

The incident occurred after the completion of polling on Monday evening when Panigrahi Gosani had gone to a polling booth in Nuagaon area to check whether the EVMs were being sealed properly before being taken to the strong room.

A police officer said Das reached the spot with his supporters and a heated argument broke out between him and Panigrahi, following which a scuffle broke out and Das allegedly pushed and punched Panigrahi.

A police team led by Gosani Nuagaon in-charge inspector Smritirekha Pradha reached the spot and controlled the situation.

Das's supporters staged a protest in front of the police station where Das was being held, demanding his release.The SP said, "We tried to convince the agitators. But they did not agree and continued their protest." He said that after reinforcements reached the police station, they left from there.



An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police sustained injuries when he was allegedly pelted with stones by the protesters, he said



Sources said Das was seeking a BJP ticket from Berhampur Assembly constituency, but Panigrahi reportedly refused to give him the ticket.

Das had earlier contested elections from the assembly constituency twice on BJP ticket and as an independent, but was unsuccessful.According to his affidavit filed during nomination before the returning officer, there were 35 criminal cases pending against him.

Meanwhile, the ruling BJD complained to the Chief Electoral Officer of Odisha that some BJP workers attacked three of its supporters in Ganjam district during the election process.Lok Sabha and Assembly elections are being held simultaneously in Odisha.
