Kolkata: The BJP on Tuesday alleged that workers of the ruling Trinamool Congress attacked the saffron party's candidate during a campaign in Sankrail in West Bengal's Jhargram district.

TMC rejected the allegation and claimed that the number of its workers was more than that of BJP.

"Sensing the defeat in Jhargram (Lok Sabha seat), TMC goons attacked BJP candidate Pranat Tudu and his workers in front of the police while going from Rohini to Roghra," BJP's West Bengal unit posted on Twitter.

The BJP urged the Election Commission to take note of the incident and take appropriate steps to ensure free and fair elections in the state.

"This is extremely unfortunate. The WB Police has become a mere spectator. Mamata Banerjee is targeting a tribal leader because he is popular and has the support of Jhargram," the saffron party said in the post.

BJP also shared a video of the alleged attack.

TMC said that the allegation is baseless.

A local TMC leader said, "BJP workers were there in large numbers, while we were only seven to eight at that place. It was they who chased us when we were on the way."

Voting will be held in Jhargram on 25th May. DC NN
