Patna: Gangster-turned-politician Ananth Kumar Singh, whose MLA wife recently joined Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JDU from the opposition RJD, came out of jail on parole on Sunday.

Singh, who was sentenced to 10 years in jail by a Patna court a few years ago in a case under the stringent UAPA, has been released for 15 days, officials said.

He came out of Beur jail on the outskirts of Patna early in the morning and reached his ancestral home in Mokama, about 100 km away, in an ambulance.

A throng of supporters welcomed Singh, who was disqualified from his fourth consecutive term as MLA from Mokama after his conviction, only because Samudra was retained by his wife Neelam Devi.

Slogans were raised in praise of the "small government", an epithet he enjoys in his home constituency, while Singh declared "victory by over 4 lakh votes" for former JD(U) president Rajeev Ranjan Singh "Lallan". of.The CM's key aide, Lalan Munger, wants to retain the Lok Sabha seat, under which Mokama falls. Voting on this seat will take place on May 13.

Interestingly, in 2019, Neelam Devi had contested against Lalan on the ticket of RJD's junior ally Congress in Bihar.

Singh, who was once considered close to the CM, had by then vindicated his resentment and in 2020 he contested the assembly elections on an RJD ticket.

Singh and his supporters had apparently blamed Lallan's "conspiracy" when grenades and rocket launchers were seized from his Mokama residence, leading to the UAPA case.

A few months ago, when Nitish Kumar broke the short-lived alliance with RJD and returned to the BJP-led NDA, Neelam Devi switched sides.RJD spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari targeted the Nitish Kumar government over Singh's release from jail.

Tiwari commented, "Here is a government which itself is on parole, what to say about the release of a person. Everyone knows how this government was formed in Bihar. Some favors have to be returned."

The release of Singh, whose influence extends beyond Mokama, is being seen as an attempt to unite the upper caste Bhumihars in Munger in favor of the NDA.

RJD has fielded Kumari Anita, wife of dreaded gangster Ashok Mahato, who I consider a staunch critic of upper caste dominance in society and politics.
