Washington, US President Joe Biden on Tuesday blamed his recent foreign trips for his debate defeat.

“I wasn't very smart. I decided to travel around the world a few times shortly before the debate,” Biden said, speaking to donors at a fundraiser in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC. "I didn't listen to my staff... and then I almost fell asleep on stage."

In his remarks, Biden acknowledged that they did not have a good debate, and said that he was "not very smart" to "travel around the world twice" before the debate.

Biden also apologized, saying he was sorry for the demonstration. "This is not an excuse but an explanation."

The President's remarks at the fund-raising event lasted just six minutes, which is much less than what he says on such occasions.

Meanwhile, the White House said Biden would travel to Wisconsin on Friday. During the campaign he will do a sit-down interview with George Stephanopoulos of ABC News.

He will travel to Philadelphia on Sunday. And next week, he will host a NATO press conference, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at her daily news conference.
