Mumbai, Veteran OBC leader and Maharashtra minister Chhagan Bhujbal has reiterated that Marathas cannot be given reservation from the Other Backward Class (OBC) community quota.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, the state Food and Civil Supplies Minister also reiterated his demand for a caste census in the state.

Bhujbal's statement comes amid the agitation by Kota activists Laxman Hake and Navnath Waghmare, who are on hunger strike for the last six days.

On Monday, a government delegation met Hek and Waghmare and urged them to end their fast, but they refused.

The agitators said that they are not against Maratha reservation, but it should not disturb the OBC quota.

Bhujbal said, "Maratha community cannot be given reservation from OBC quota. We are not saying this, but the last four commissions (on reservation) have also said the same. Even the Supreme Court has said no on this. Said."

Now again there is a demand for reservation from OBC (quota), he said, referring to the protest by Maratha activist Manoj Jarange.

Bhujbal said that caste-based census in the state will pave the way for the OBC community to get more money.

The striking OBC workers are demanding revocation of the state government's draft notification that recognizes Kunbis as "rishi soyare" (blood relatives) of Maratha community members.

Bhujbal further said that he has shown the state assembly how Kunbi records are being manipulated.
