Sejourn said that a year after civil war broke out in the country, Sudanese were victims of displacement and hunger, as well as being forgotten. “Today we are putting a forgotten crisis on the agenda,” he said.

Baerbock pledged €244 million ($260 million) to Sudan and its neighbors in addition to previous funding. He called on all countries participating in the donor conference to "contribute in a similar manner". He said that together, a terrible disaster can be avoided.

The world's biggest refugee crisis is "being played out before your eyes," Baerbock said. Refugee camps in South Sudan were overcrowded, with new people arriving every day who could not be accommodated.

He said food, drinking water, baby food, medicines, clothing, schooling, housing and "above all psychological counselling" were all in short supply.
