A special court for public representatives in Bengaluru has summoned BJP MLA Harish Poonja and 64 other party members.

The summons pertains to allegations of preventing police from carrying out their duties during protests against the arrest of BJP Belthangady Taluk Yuva Morcha president Shashiraj Shetty.

Poonja and others will have to appear in court on July 10.

Beltangadi police have registered two separate cases. Summons have been issued to 28 people in the first case and 37 people in the second case.

Those involved will have to appear before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's court on July 10 for formal questioning.

In the first case, MLA Poonja and other BJP workers have been accused of trying to pressure the police to release Shashiraj Shetty, who was detained on charges of illegal mining. The second case pertains to a protest organized outside an administrative building on May 20 against the FIR lodged against Shetty.

After the Belthangady police filed the charge sheet, the court decided to issue summons on Thursday, which will begin the judicial proceedings scheduled for July 10.
