The accident, which occurred near New Jalpaiguri railway station on June 17, killed 11 people and injured more than 40, including the guard of the Kanchenjunga Express and the loco pilot of the goods train that was hit from behind.

Sources said that though the medical condition of goods train assistant loco pilot Manu Kumar is improving, he is still not able to come out of the mental trauma of witnessing the fatal accident.

“Once he comes out of trouble, his statement will be recorded in detail. As per protocol, he will have to give a written statement besides answering the questions of the investigating officers,” said a Railways source.

Since the loco pilot of the goods train and the guard of the Kanchenjunga Express died in the accident, Kumar's statement is important for drafting the final investigation report, he said.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the goods train exceeded the restricted speed limit of 15 kmph while traveling the distance between Rangpani and Chatter Hat and hit the Kanchenjunga Express from behind.
