According to Darjeeling district Additional Superintendent of Police Abhishek Roy, the dead also include the loco pilot of the goods train which hit the Kanchenjunga Express.

Roy did not rule out the possibility of the death toll rising as rescue operations continued. He said that till now the number of injured is more than 30.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee decided to visit the accident site and personally monitor the rescue operations there.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a post on Twitter that Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav is going to the accident site.

As the number of injured admitted to hospitals in North Bengal started increasing, the state health department has inquired about the quantity of blood reserved there. Leave of all medical staff and people associated with emergency departments has been canceled indefinitely.

Meanwhile, the North Bengal State Corporate Corporation (NBSTC) had decided to run special buses between Siliguri and Kolkata to help other passengers traveling by the ill-fated Kolkata-bound train.

Following the accident at the spot, which is a major railway connectivity route between West Bengal and Northeast India, the Railways has diverted several long-distance trains, including the Rajdhani Express and Vande Bharat Express. Northeast Frontier Railway has announced several helpline numbers in this regard.
