Kolkata, The death of an elderly man in Bankura district on Tuesday has sparked a political controversy, with the Saffron Party alleging that he was murdered by TMC members.

Contradicting the claim, West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC president Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said the BJP was unnecessarily politicizing the death, which she attributed to a family dispute.

According to a police officer, Bankubehari Mahato, 70, was injured on Tuesday during a fight with his neighbor over cutting down a tree and later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

Mahato's death sparked protests in the area, with BJP activists staging demonstrations outside the Khatra police station, alleging that he was the local BJP president and was murdered by TMC supporters.

Senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Subhas Sarkar on Wednesday visited the Bankura Sammilani Medical College, where Mahato's body was kept in the mortuary, and claimed that the incident was another case of post-election violence orchestrated by the TMC after Lok Sabha poll results.

Responding to the BJP's allegations, Banerjee said, "The BJP is spreading false information about the Bankura incident. From what I have investigated, it appears to be a case of a family land dispute. The police have taken appropriate action."

Supporting Banerjee's comment, Bankura police posted on village have already been arrested in connection with the incident."

The publication further clarified: "The investigation carried out so far indicates that there was a land dispute between the accused and the deceased. On the day of the incident, a fight broke out over the felling of a tree on that land, which resulted in the injury. to the deceased."
