Sources in the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) said the decision has been taken to ensure that a local policeman aware of the topography of the area concerned will enable the QRT to reach any sensitive spot immediately.

Sources also said that the average response time for QRTs to reach problem spots has been fixed at 15 minutes.

During the sixth phase of voting on May 25, the Election Commission received several complaints alleging that QRTs arrived at places where opposition candidates were gheraoed and manhandled late.

Suvendu Adhikari, leader of the opposition in the state assembly, was particularly critical on the issue.

Therefore, to avoid recurrence of such complaints in the seventh phase of voting, the ECI has decided to make the QRT more proactive to deal with any untoward incident.

The nine Lok Sabha seats that will go to polls on June 1 include Kolkata South, Kolkata North, Jadavpur, Jaynagar, Mathurapur, Diamond Harbor Basirhat, Barasat and Dum Dum.
