Kolkata, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday announced that her government will approach the High Court challenging the Calcutta High Court order which has canceled all OBC certificates issued in the state since 2010.

Addressing an election rally at Sagar in South 24 Parganas district, he said the state government would appeal against the order in the High Court after the summer holidays.

“We do not accept the order which has abolished OBC certificates. We will contest the high court elections after the summer vacations,” Banerjee said.

The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday declared as illegal the OBC status granted to several sections in West Bengal since 2010, sparking a political debate amid the Lok Sabha elections.

The court said that the inclusion of 77 categories of Muslims in the list of backward categories was "treating them as a vote bank".

Banerjee urged voters not to "give a single vote to anyone except BJP or TMC so that the India Bloc can form the government at the Centre".
