KOLKATA: West Bengal Governor C V Anand Bose on Friday wrote to President Draupadi Murmu saying the swearing-in of two newly elected TMC MLAs by the Assembly Speaker is a "violation of the Constitution", a Raj Bhavan official said.

He wrote the letter to the President after Speaker Biman Banerjee administered the oath to two TMC MLAs instead of the Deputy Speaker, who was authorized by Bose for the task.

“The Governor has written to Speaker Draupadi Murmu about the constitutional impropriety of the Speaker. The governor has also said in his letter that the Bengal Speaker administering the oath to two MLAs in the state assembly is a violation of the Constitution,” the Raj Bhavan official said.

After a month-long standoff between the Raj Bhavan and the Assembly, two TMC MLAs - Rayat Hussain Sarkar from Bhagwangola in Murshidabad district and Sayantika Banerjee from Baranagar on the northern outskirts of Kolkata - took oath during a special session of the state Assembly.
