The information sought by the state health department on Saturday includes registration numbers, Aadhaar and PAN numbers, mobile numbers and details of their academic records. Resident physician and senior resident positions are non-practice positions, meaning they are not permitted to practice privately beyond their hospital duties.

Although the state health department has not given any reason for seeking such details, the development has created shockwaves among members of the medical fraternity amid the ongoing protest over the gruesome rape and murder of a junior doctor of the state-run firm R.G Kar Medical. College & Hospital inside the hospital premises last month.

Representatives of the medical community consider the notification to be significant also in the context of the suspension of two resident doctors and one senior resident doctor attached to two state-run medical colleges and hospitals. The three were known to be close confidants of Sandip Ghosh, the former and controversial director of the West Bengal Medical Council.

Ghosh is currently in the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) due to his alleged links with the R.G. financial irregularities case. Kar.

Complaints are mounting against the two suspended resident doctors and a senior resident for harassing and threatening junior doctors using their political influence as a shield.

The three suspended doctors are Avik De, former resident physician (RMO) of the radiodiagnosis department of Burdwan Medical College; Dr Birupaksha Biswas, former senior resident doctor attached to the pathology department of the same hospital, and resident doctor of Midnapore Medical College & Hospital Mustafizur Rahaman Mallick.

A crucial hearing into the gruesome rape and murder is scheduled for Monday in the Supreme Court, when CBI is supposed to submit its progress report on the investigation into the matter.
