The arrested person has been identified as Budhaditya Chattopadhyay, a resident of Kasba area in South Kolkata. He claimed to be a research scholar of Harvard University and defrauded many people of crores of rupees by promising to get their tender applications passed in the state health department.

The ED started investigation on the basis of a case registered in the matter in 2022. As the investigation progressed, the investigating agency revealed that the fraud had been going on since 2019 and on Wednesday they finally arrested the mastermind of the scam.

Apart from defrauding individuals to the tune of Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000, the accused also allegedly defrauded a Bengaluru-based organization to the tune of Rs 26 crore.

As per estimates of ED officials, he has defrauded various individuals and entities of more than Rs 35 crore since 2019.
