Bengaluru, Bruhat Bengaluru Municipal Corporation (BBMP) aims to revive 185 lakes in the city limits within the next four years by inviting proposals from corporates and individual bodies.

Preeti Gehlot, Special Commissioner, Forest, Environment and Climate Chang (FECC), BBMP, said that while there are 202 lakes within the BBMP limits in Bengaluru, the remaining 17 lakes are beyond rejuvenation or have been significantly encroached upon.

Speaking at a webinar organized by Bengaluru Chambers of Industry and Commerce (BCIC), he said that we have many challenges including encroachment, sewage flow, solid waste dumping etc. In some cases, chemical flow also occurs. These factors, coupled with inadequate funding and staffing and interdepartmental coordination, hamper proper planning.He said lack of technical knowledge, including proper understanding of geography and geotechnical aspects, contributes to the slow progress of lake rejuvenation.

“We have also set up a Bangalore Climate Action Plan within the BBMP to work on a comprehensive plan to deliver long-term impact initiatives. The seven sectors we have identified to work on include transport, energy and buildings, solid waste, Water and waste water, air quality, urban planning, greening and biodiversity and disaster resilience.

BBMP has submitted its Community Partnership Lake Conservation Policy 202 to the Karnataka High Court, which will be presented to the public once approved.“While we await approval from the High Court, we are inviting corporate individual bodies, or resident welfare associations to come forward with proposals to contribute in terms of property and maintenance for the conservation and rejuvenation of the lakes in the city. Have been. Beautification is not a priority, the proposals should have clarity of funding along with the support of the Technica team to start the screening process,” Gehlot said.

"Our focus is entirely on implementation. With proper planning with various stakeholders over the next 3 to 4 months, we can make a significant contribution to solving the water crisis from the lakes' perspective."

S Devarajan, BCIC President and Senior Vice President, TVS Motor Company, said that many water conservation initiatives have been taken, but a lot still remains to be done.“BCIC will be happy to extend any assistance to BBM to deal with the water situation in the city.”

Inviting proposals for both core and non-core works for conservation and rejuvenation of the lake, Gehlot informed that the main components of rejuvenation of the lake include fencing, desilting, improvement of main dam, construction of peripheral dam, protection from inlet stream. Involves removal of silt, rehabilitation of drains, creation of wetlands. For sewage treatment and water balancing and construction of sluice gates and outlet improvements.

Non-core works include improvement of footpath in the dam area, security, construction of gates and display boards, maintenance of facilities like park area, children's play area, open gym equipment, CCTV, light poles, digital monitoring of water quality etc. Construction is involved.

Gehlo said, “For developed lakes, we invite proposals for setting up aerators, floatin islands to maintain biodiversity and introduce fish into the lake."
