Washington: The US is waiting to see the results of India's investigation into allegations related to a conspiracy to assassinate Sikh separatist leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in the US, a State Department official has said.

"They (the Indian government) have opened an inquiry committee to look into the matter and that work is ongoing; we will wait to see the outcome. But we have made it clear that this is something we are taking seriously And we think they, we should also take this seriously,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters at his daily news conference.

Miller was responding to a question on allegations that Indian government officials were involved in a conspiracy to assassinate American citizen and separatist Sikh leader Pannun.

He said, "I will refer you to Canadian authorities to talk about the details of the investigation.Regarding the indictment returned to the United States, I will let the Justice Department speak in detail on its behalf," he told reporters.

Miller said, "And then I would just say one thing: When it comes to the State Department, we made it clear when these allegations first became public that this is something that we believe India should do very, very well." “There should be a serious investigation.”

The Washington Post, citing unnamed sources, had recently named a Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) official in connection with an alleged plot to kill Pannu on US soil last year.

Criticizing the US daily's report, India has strongly rejected the claims and said the report makes "unfair and baseless" allegations on a serious matter and the matter is under investigation."The report in question makes unfair and baseless allegations on a serious matter," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in New Delhi last Tuesday.

Jaiswal said a high-level inquiry committee set up by New Delhi to probe the inputs provided by the US on the alleged conspiracy is still probing the matter.
