Ahmedabad: The principal of a government school was beaten up by some people when he had gone to survey a madrassa in Ahmedabad on Saturday. Police gave this information.

Police have arrested two people after registering a case against five to seven people for unlawful assembly, rioting and voluntarily causing hurt, robbery and criminal intimidation, a police officer said.

Sandeep Patel, principal of Shruti Higher Secondary School, as part of a government exercise, had gone to Madras, located in the city's Dariyapur area, to collect details about the number of students and its infrastructure, the official said.

Finding the premises closed, he started taking photographs of it from outside. Just then, a group of people came up to him and wanted to know what he was doing.

Despite explaining to the group that he was a school principal and was taking photographs as per government orders, they beat him up and snatched his mobile phone and documents.

Patel said in his complaint that the group also threatened to kill him and he somehow escaped from the spot.

“We have arrested two people in this connection. Further investigation is underway,” said the Dariyapur police station officer.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) education committee official Labdhir Desa said several such premises were surveyed as per the government order.

"We conducted a survey on 175 madrassas and each team consisted of two members. We received support during the exercise," he said.
