New Delhi: Defending champion Neeraj Chopra will lead the 28-member Indian athletics contingent at the Paris Olympics starting on July 26.

The 26-year-old Tokyo Games gold medalist and reigning world champion in javelin throw has decided to skip the last Diamond League in Paris this weekend to prepare for the quadrennial Mahakumbh as almost all the selected names are on expected lines.

The team comprises 17 male and 11 female athletes, with some other prominent names being Asian Games champion Avinash Sable, Tejinderpal Singh Toor as well as sprint hurdler Jyoti Yaraji.

The 4x400m men's relay team of Muhammad Anas, Muhammad Ajmal, Amoj Jacob and Rajesh Ramesh, which created quite a stir by pipping the USA team in one of the heats at the last World Championships, will also be followed with keen interest.

The track and field competition will be held at the Stade de France between August 1 and August 11.

World Athletics has introduced the marathon race walk mixed-relay event, while the men's 50 km race walk has been left out of the Olympic programme.
