The three-time world half-marathon champion pipped world record-holder Tigist Assefa, London 2021 winner Joycelyn Jepkosgei and last year's runner-up Magertu Alemu – all of whom finished the race under 2:17 – and took her third Recorded victory. In the World Marathon Majors race.

The pace was fast from the start as a group of nine women covered the 10 km distance in 31:26. By the time they reached the halfway point in 1:07:04, seven women remained in the group, World Athletics said in a report on its website on Sunday.

The race was about 18 miles in when the quartet of Jepchirchir, Assefa Jepkosgei and Alemu managed to separate themselves from the rest of the field, and they ran together for the best part of eight miles.

As the clock struck 2:15, Alemu was finally subbed off with a little over a minute remaining. A few seconds later, Jepchirchir achieved his trademark finish to overtake Jepkosgei and Assefa.

The younger Kenyan crossed the finish line in 2:16:16, breaking the world record of 2:17:01 set by Mary Keitany in 2017, which was only for women.

Moments later, Alexander Mutiso Munyao made a Kenyan double by winning the men's race in 2:04:01, 14 seconds ahead of Ethiopia's Kenenisa Bekele.
