Mumbai: Ather Energy will set up a Rs 2,000-crore electric scooter manufacturing plant at Aurangabad Industrial City (AURIC) in central Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, the state government on Wednesday said.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said in a post on X that the plant will produce one million units of vehicles and battery packs annually and create about 4,000 jobs.

“Just had a meeting with Swapnil Jain, Founder of Ather Energy and I am happy to share with him about his great decision that leading electric scooter manufacturer Ather Energy has made to move to Maharashtra for its third manufacturing facility in Aurangabad. Industrial City (AURIC),” he said.

Fadnavis said the development underlines Maharashtra's supportive business environment and strong electric vehicle manufacturing policies, which is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for India's industrial growth.

It also shows that Maharashtra is a preferred destination for investment in automotive innovation, and "Marathwada region will lead the growth story of Maharashtra," Fadnavis said.

The Deputy CM said that with the Samriddhi Expressway providing effective connectivity, investors are increasingly looking at the potential of the sector.

The Shiv Sena-BJP-NCP government in Maharashtra has faced criticism from the opposition for failing to attract investments and allowing some big projects to go to Gujarat.

Assembly elections are to be held in Maharashtra in October.
