Bern [Switzerland] At least four people have died and one is missing in floods in southern Switzerland, CNN reported, citing local police and Swiss state media.

However, Swiss public broadcaster SRF reported that three people had been killed in a landslide in the Maggia Valley.

Switzerland's Valais canton police said another man was found dead in a hotel in Saas-Grund, with preliminary findings suggesting he may have been surprised by rapidly rising water, CNN reports.

Additionally, the Valais cantonal police said in a press release on Sunday that a search was underway for a 52-year-old man who had been missing from the village of Binn since Saturday evening.

The public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the case of the man missing in the bin and the man found dead in Saas-Grund, police said.

Police said in a press release that the flooding was the result of a rapid rise in the water levels of several rivers, including the Rhône, due to storms and melting snow.

He further said that debris is also flowing due to the floods and many roads have been closed, CNN reported.

The Rhone River is overflowing in several places, prompting the evacuation of hundreds of people in the canton of Valais, according to a statement from the local government.

The statement further said that "major damage" was also reported in valleys near the Rhone River in Upper Valais.

Following the floods, the Valais canton said it had called in the army to provide further assistance.

Meanwhile, in France, the Haute-Saône department, which borders Switzerland, was also hit by strong storms overnight.

"Last night, Haute-Saône was hit by a violent storm with intense rain and strong gusts of wind," the local government said in a post on Twitter.
