QUETTA [Balochistan], At least 11 people lost their lives after inhaling methane gas inside a coal mine in Sanjadi area, about 50 km from Quetta, according to Dawn.

Nine coal miners, a coal company manager and a contractor lost their lives in the incident that took place on Monday.

"The coal miners were working in a mine about 1,500 feet deep when the gas explosion started and spread rapidly. All the coal miners became unconscious," Abdul Ghani Shahwani, chief inspector of mines in Balochistan, told Dawn.

He told that when he entered the mine with the contractor and manager at around 5 pm, it was found that till one and a half hour no signal was coming from the mine.

When no response was received, rescue teams from the mines department rushed to the spot.

When rescue workers entered the mine, after first taking safety precautions and venting the gas, no one was found alive.

“All nine miners and two others were found dead inside the mine,” the official said, according to Dawn. The bodies were taken to a nearby health facility, where they died, he said.

The Chief Inspector said that the mine belonged to the United Coal Mining Company and all the miners who lost their lives came from Swat.

The incident is under investigation. At present the coal mine has been sealed.
