Nagaon: Two brothers who illegally entered the Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam's Nagaon district were killed in firing by a forest guard on Saturday. Police sources gave this information.

Taking note of the incident, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed the Chief Secretary to order an investigation into the matter.

"Last night, people of Sutripar village entered the Lavkhua-Burachpari Reserve Forest. During an encounter with patrolling forest guards, a guard opened fire in self-defence, resulting in the death of Samaruddin (35) and Abdul Jalil (40). happened." Sarma posted on X.

"I have directed the Chief Secretary of Assam to immediately constitute an inquiry to thoroughly investigate the incident," the CM said.

Local police sources, requesting anonymity, said the two brothers had entered the area around midnight for illegal fishing activity.

When the forest guards saw them, they allegedly attempted to run away, following which they opened fire, resulting in the death of both of them.

The post-mortem of the dead bodies was done in the local hospital and after that the bodies were handed over to the relatives on Saturday.

Rupohihat MLA Nurul Huda visited the house of the deceased and demanded investigation and compensation to the victims' families.

"If they had tried to escape, they should have been shot in the leg. The forest department will have to answer why they killed these two poor fishermen and compensate the families," the Congress MLA said.

Villagers told that both the brothers were fishermen and had gone fishing in Raumari Beel earlier also.
