Guwahati, The Assam government on Wednesday decided to offer VRS to 612 employees of its ailing agricultural marketing board, while giving a one-time arrangement to 147 contingency and fixed salary employees.

The decision to slash the Assam State Agricultural Marketing Board (ASAMB) was taken during a Cabinet meeting this afternoon, according to a statement shared by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on X.

"To rationalize manpower utilization in the government services sector, the Cabinet has approved a financial settlement plan for ASAMB employees," he added.

ASAMB employees have not received salaries for more than a year and periodically hold protests demanding their dues.

The Cabinet note said 612 regular ASAMB employees will be offered a Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS), while a one-off severance/gratuity payment will be paid to 147 contingency and fixed salary employees.

"An additional 10 per cent on this package will be given in addition to the settlement amount as a gesture of goodwill by the government. The total fund for the entire financial year will be Rs 154 crore, which will be paid by the state," he added. .

Consequently, the Cabinet approved different formulas for employees considering their year of service in the entity.

The government also decided to grant 180 days of child adoption leave to its employees to ensure proper care of adopted children under one year of age.

Furthermore, the Cabinet approved extending the 'Apon Ghar' scheme until March 2026, which will allow government employees to buy houses.

"The loan limit will also be raised from the current Rs 15 lakh to Rs 30 lakh with 1 per cent interest subvention. Till date, the Assam Government has provided interest subvention of Rs 596 crore, benefiting 37,277 state government employees." the statement said.

Additionally, the Cabinet approved the Assam Goods Transport Plan on Stage Transport and Contract Transport Buses, 2024, which will ensure smooth movement of e-commerce items.
