Guwahati, A total of 31 animals have died so far due to drowning, while another 82 have been rescued from floods in the worst deluge in recent years within the famous Kaziranga National Park, a park official said on Thursday.

Animal mortality includes 23 deer due to drowning in the Park and 15 during treatment.

Forest officials rescued 73 deer, two otters, two sambar deer, a scops owl, a rhino calf, an Indian hare and a jungle cat.

Currently, 20 animals are under treatment, while 31 others have been released after treatment, the official said.

In total, 11 animals drowned, while another 65 were rescued as of Wednesday from floods in the severely affected park.

Meanwhile, a royal Bengal tiger reached a neighboring village in Nagaon district from the flooded park and forest officials were trying to tranquilise the animal.

Police personnel were deployed to prevent any untoward incident and control the people as panic gripped the village area.

Two people were arrested for allegedly consuming venison, probably from deer that had strayed from the northern part of the park in Biswanath district.

Of the total 233 camps in Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, 95 remained flooded till Thursday night, down from 141 during the day, the official said.

Forest department employees, including security personnel, remain at these camps within the national park to carry out patrols to protect flora and fauna.

In the eastern range or Agoratoli, 12 of the 34 camps have been flooded, while 31 of the 58 camps in the central range, 33 of the 39 in the western range or Bagori, eight of the 25 in Burapahar and three of the nine in Bokakhat were left under flood waters.

So far, forest staff have cleared a total of seven camps - two in the central range, three in Bokakhat and one each in the Biswanath and Nagaon wildlife divisions.
