GUWAHATI: Assam's ruling BJP on Saturday termed the exit poll results as a reflection of people's faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as the results have put the saffron party-led alliance in a comfortable position in the state.

However, opposition parties including Congress and AIUDF said that the actual results would be different from the exit polls.

Most exit poll results have seen the tally of BJP and its allies in the state going from nine to 12, Congress going from zero to two and AIUDF, among others, going from zero to one.

In the outgoing Lok Sabha, BJP has nine MPs, Congress has three and AIUDF and an independent have one MP each.

BJP spokesperson Dewan Dhruba Jyoti Maral said, “The exit poll results match the predictions made by our party and the chief minister. This shows people's faith in Modi ji and they want to see him as Prime Minister for the third time."

He claimed that when the actual counting of votes takes place on June 4, the same results will emerge.

“The number of BJP and its allies will be in double digits here,” Maral said.

BJP had fielded candidates on 11 seats, out of which two were left for Assam Gana Parishad and one for UPPL.

Congress leader Debabrata Saikia said that exit poll results cannot be given much importance as they have been proved wrong in the past.“We will have to wait for three more days and know the actual results,” he said.

Congress had contested elections on 13 seats, while its ally Assam Jatiya Parishad had fielded its candidate on one seat.

AIUDF general secretary Aminul Islam claimed that although most exit polls have shown the party's seats at zero, they are confident of winning at least one seat.

"We will definitely retain Dhubri. And the numbers given to BJP and allies will come down," he said.,

Voting was held in three phases for 14 Lok Sabha seats in the state, with 81.56 percent voting.
