Guwahati, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday expressed grief over the deaths of those killed in the collision between a goods train and the Kanchenjunga Express in West Bengal and assured all possible help.

Sarma said his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the accident.

"The tragic train collision between Kanchenjunga Express and goods train is extremely unfortunate," he posted on X.

"We are closely monitoring the situation and will provide all necessary assistance if needed," he said.

At least 15 people were killed and 60 others were injured in the collision near Rangpani station in West Bengal's Darjeeling district.

Speaking to reporters later, Sarma said he had already spoken to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav and taken stock of the situation.

"We are investigating whether any of the deceased or injured are from Assam. We have not received any names yet. Our chief secretary is personally monitoring the situation," he said.

The CM said that the Assam government will take all necessary steps to bring the people of the state back to their homes.

"If any injured person is from Assam, we will arrange advanced treatment for them," he said.
