Guwahati: The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) will form a fact-finding committee, comprising senior leaders, to analyze the reasons for the party's defeat in the three Lok Sabha seats it contested in Assam.

The AIUDF suffered a setback when its president and three-term Dhubri MP Badruddin Ajmal was defeated by Congress's Rakibul Hussain by a record margin of over 10 lakh votes.

“We have to analyze our mistakes and where we went wrong. A fact-finding team will be formed and its members will go to each district and talk to people and find out why they did not vote for us,” party spokesperson Aminul Islam said at a press conference here.

AIUDF had also contested elections in Nagaon and Karimganj, where its candidates Aminul Islam and Sahabul Islam Choudhary finished third.

Asked about contesting only three constituencies, Islam said, 'We did not want the secular votes to be divided, so we contested only three seats, but people rejected us and went in favor of the Congress. Gave the mandate.

He claimed that in this election, 78 percent minority votes have gone in favor of Congress and Assam is also no exception to this.

“There is always victory and defeat in politics. There have been many occasions when parties have not performed well, but that does not mean they should be written off,” the AIUDF leader said.

"Efforts will be made to correct the mistakes pointed out by the people and we will make a new beginning to win back their trust," Islam said.

He also said that by-elections are to be held in five assembly constituencies and the core committee of the party will decide the strategy regarding which seats will be contested in these elections.
