Guwahati (Assam) [India], After the defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, giving a big blow to the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), the party's General Secretary Aminul Islam has resigned.

Aminul Islam, MLA representing Mankachar Assembly constituency, told ANI on Monday that he takes responsibility for the party's election defeat in Assam.

He said, "Taking responsibility for the defeat of the party candidates in the Lok Sabha elections, I resign from all posts of the party."

In the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, AIUDF contested three seats – Dhubri, Nagaon and Karimganj – and the party lost all three seats.

AIDUF supremo Badruddin Ajmal contested from Dhubri, Aminul Islam from Nagaon and Sahabul Islam Choudhary from Karimganj.

Dhubri has been a stronghold of AIDUF since 2009.

Ajmal lost this seat to Rakibul Hussain of Congress by more than 10 lakh votes.

According to Election Commission of India data, out of the total 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, BJP won nine, Congress won three, BJP ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People's Party, Liberal (UPPL) won one each. Got a seat.

Voting was held in Assam in three phases on April 19, April 26 and May 7 in 14 constituencies namely Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Kaziranga, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Diphu, Darrang-Udalguri, Karinganj, Silchar, Barpeta, Kokrajhar, Dhubri. And Guwahati.
