GUWAHATI: A man arrested accused of raping a minor girl in Assam's Udalguri district was injured in police firing while he was trying to escape from custody, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday.

Altogether five people have been arrested for raping the girl.

The Chief Minister directed Director General of Police GP Singh to investigate the matter under the supervision of a senior officer.

''In connection with Majbaat PS case number 30/24, which involved the rape of a minor girl by several boys on June 22, five miscreants have been arrested. “The main accused got injured in police firing yesterday while trying to escape,” Sarma posted on Instagram.

On Saturday, five men allegedly lured the girl to a secluded place in Dhunsuri tea garden of Mazabat police station under some pretext and the family lodged a police complaint the next day.

Police have since arrested five accused from different places in Udalguri and Darrang districts.

An accused attempted to escape from custody on Tuesday night and was injured when police opened fire to stop him from escaping.

"I have directed @DGPAssamPolice to thoroughly investigate the matter under the supervision of a senior officer," the Chief Minister said.
