Washington and India are a strategic partner with whom they engage in full and frank dialogue, the United States said, urging New Delhi to make clear to Russia that any resolution to the conflict in Ukraine must respect the UN Charter and the territorial integrity of Ukraine. and sovereignty.

This was stated by State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller on Monday when asked about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's current visit to Russia and his meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"India is a strategic partner with whom we engage in full and frank dialogue. And that includes our concerns about its relationship with Russia," Miller said.

"We just saw Modi, as well as (Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor) Orban, meet with (Ukrainian) President (Volodymyr) Zelenskyy. We thought it was an important step to take. And we urged India, as we do with any country when it engages with Russia, to make clear that any resolution to the conflict in Ukraine must be one that respects the UN charter, that respects the territorial integrity of Ukraine, the sovereignty of Ukraine," Miller said at a conference press.

"I will be watching Prime Minister Modi's public statements to see what he talked about. But, as I said, we made our concerns very clear directly to India about its relationship with Russia. So we hope that India and any other country, when engage, with Russia, it would make it clear that Russia must respect the UN charter, it must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine," he said in response to another question.

India has been firmly upholding its "special and privileged strategic partnership" with Russia and maintained momentum in ties despite the Ukraine conflict.

India has not yet condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and has consistently advocated for a resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.

Putin received Modi at his official residence in Novo-Ogaryovo on Monday night for a "private engagement." Top sources said India's position is that "a solution cannot be found on the battlefield", indicating that the Ukraine conflict featured prominently during their informal talks.

On Tuesday, Modi will co-chair with Putin the 22nd annual India-Russia summit.

The focus of the 22nd annual India-Russia summit is likely to boost bilateral cooperation in the areas of energy, security, trade, investment and people-to-people exchanges.

This is Modi's first trip to Russia since his invasion of Ukraine more than two years ago.
