Srinagar: National Conference leader Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said the huge turnout in Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency in Jammu and Kashmir was due to the courage shown by the people in expressing themselves through voting.

Abdullah, who is a candidate from Baramulla Lok Sabha seat, did not agree with the claims of top BJP leaders that the record voting was due to the abrogation of Article 370 by the Center in 2019.

"We know how good the situation is. What happened two days ago in Shopian and Pahalgam tells us how good the situation is."

"People showed courage to exercise their right to vote. The Center does not get credit for this. If they want to link it to Article 370 (removal), they will have to answer that turnout was higher in elections held before 1990. Why did it happen? the NC vice president told reporters at the NC headquarters here.

Asked whether the high voting percentage was due to people's anger against the abrogation of Article 370, the former chief minister said this was "also the reason".

The highest ever turnout of 59 percent was recorded in the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency on Monday.

"The second reason is that they are not listened to at any level. The present government is ruling like undisputed kings."

"Who is allowed to enter government offices today? And even if they do enter, whose problems are they solved?" He asked.

All decisions are announced like royal decrees and people are worried. Abdullah said, there are many reasons but the good thing is that they have used their vote, because in a democracy it is the only way to express themselves.
