Vijayawada The Vijayawada parliamentary constituency has emerged as a battleground in the May 13 Lok Sabha elections between brother K Srinivas of Andhra Pradesh's ruling YSRCP and main opposition TDP candidate Shivnath.

While Srinivas is a seasoned politician, his younger brother Shivnath, a transport tycoon turned politician, also a businessman, is trying his electoral luck for the first time. His elder brother Srinivas (58) was a prominent TDP leader until a few months ago, but he was forced to join the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP in January due to differences with some party leaders at the local and state levels. Fell. Supporters.

One of the main reasons for Srinivas' exit from TDP was the party's decision to replace him with Shivnath as its candidate for the Lok Sabha elections. Srinivas, popularly known as Kesineni Nani and owner of the now defunct Kesineni Travels Company, was an MP for almost a decade and had also resigned from the post of MP after leaving TDP.Vijayawada Lok Sabha constituency comprises Tiruvuru (SC), Vijayawada West, Vijayawada Central, Vijayawada East, Mylavaram Nandigama (SC) and Jaggayyapeta assembly constituencies.

In the 2019 election, Srinivas secured 5.75 lakh votes and defeated his YSRC rival PV Prasad, who secured 5.66 lakh votes, while Janasena's M Prasad Babu got 81,650 votes.

Srinivas' election issue was "dedication of his life to the city of Vijayawada", which is located in the center of the southern state and is also a major commercial centre.

As a two-time MP, Srinivas has managed to garner some goodwill, said K Tata Rao, a 70-year-old local resident who regularly spends his evenings relaxing with friends over a cup of tea on Bandar Road .

“Kesineni Nani (Srinivasa) developed flyovers in the city.Kanakadurgamma flyover and a flyover near Benz Circle. He did a good job, he will come next time too,” said Rao.

However, he described Shivnath's decision to contest against his own brother as "a move of his own accord".

The younger Kasineni brother is undergoing political testing and lacks the experience of his older brother. Beyond sibling rivalry, Rao, a retired government employee, said he and other common people are more concerned about the fate of the southern state because of the "indifference" of the BJP-led central government. He alleged that since 2014, when Andhra Pradesh was bifurcated, the central government did not do anything meaningful for the remaining state.

“What the Congress government did at that time, they said they would give special category status (SCS) for 10 years and BJP also supported it. BJ came to power and said that SCS is a closed chapter. Ten years have passed, what good has BJP done to Andhra Pradesh?” He asked.

Rao reminded that the PM had promised SCS "at the feet of Sri Venkateswara Swamy in Tirupati" before the 2014 elections and yet he broke his promise.Although the southern state is contributing thousands of crores of rupees in GST, Rao said the Narendra Modi-led Center "is not returning its fair share of the tax revenue.

On all issues related to Andhra Pradesh, including the Visakhapatnam Steel Scheme privatization issue, which people are protesting against, Rao claimed that the BJP government has committed "extreme injustice" and continues to do so.

He said that the Center has not given justice to the people in matters like prices of LPG and fuel.

K Naga Brahmayya (33), a worker from Ranigarithota area, who loads and unloads sacks of flour from a wholesale shop for onward shipment to kirana (grocery) shops across the city, lamented that such leaders in Andhra Pradesh There is a shortage of people who can fight to secure the SCS.

“Jagan talks many things here in the state but not in the presence of Modi.He cannot repeat all those things which he says to the people in the presence of Modi. Modi does not need 22 YSRCP MPs.

Commenting on the Polavaram Project, a multi-purpose major irrigation initiative, the daily wage laborer said it was in a deplorable state and added that successive governments had failed to complete it.

Simultaneous elections for 25 Lok Sabha seats and 175 assembly constituencies in the southern state will be held on May 13 and the results will be declared on June 4.
