Bapatla (Andhra Pradesh), Following six drowning deaths last week, two beaches in the state's Bapatla district were temporarily closed by local police and people were stopped from entering the sea.

Bapatla Superintendent of Police Vakul Jindal said six people drowned last week, resulting in police banning entry into the water at Suryalanka and Vadrevu beaches.

"Six people drowned in the sea last week, while we managed to rescue 14 people. At this time of the year, the water (the beach) is very dangerous," Jindal said.

Although some people only venture into knee-deep water, the SP observed that the rough nature of the sea at this time due to climatic conditions is proving fatal and is sweeping them away.

Jindal said the sea is more rough this year and at some places beachgoers can be rescued...but not everyone can be saved as police cannot be present everywhere all the time.

With a 76 km long coastline, Bapatla beach attracts many tourists from within the state as well as outside. Jindal said about 15,000 tourists visit on weekends.
